Before and After

This homeowner did not have a very comfortable home. She constantly had to use blankets in the winter when she wanted to relax. We explained to her that her home could be much more comfortable than that. We found that she had a very leaky home that was not properly air sealed or even insulated. We proposed many solutions to her problem and part of the project that she decided to go ahead with was insulating her small attic. The attic was a major source to a lot of her problems. We proposed to insulate the attic from the outside because it was so small and had limited access from the inside of the home. We cut a small access panel out from underneath the siding, open blowed TruSoft Insulation throughout the entire attic and then sealed the access panel and reattached the siding. The customer was very happy with the results of our work and is already much more comfortable and she can't wait to see how this summer goes.

Homes without insulation in the attic can be exceptionally drafty. When left uninsulated, you are allowing the air that you pay to heat in winter and cool in the summer to escape right out through the roof. All the money spent on heating and cooling bills is essentially just wasted. When you do a simple upgrade such as spray foaming the ceiling, you stop that massive air leakage from taking place. You now have the ability to trap some of the conditioned air in your home and actually enjoy a steady temperature in the home. As discussed, that is exactly what we did to this home. We took an uninsulated, leaky attic and turned it into a completely spray foamed attic where the air leakage is now almost non-existant. Needless to say, the homeowner is very happy and much more comfortable.

Symptoms of poor attic insulation

  • Rooms located below the attic get too hot or too cold, even when other parts of the house remain comfortable.
  • High electric bills and/or high costs for heating fuel.
  • Cold drafts during wintertime.
  • Recessed “can” lights in the ceiling directly below the attic.
  • Attic floor joists can be seen above or between existing attic insulation.
  • Less than 10 in. of existing attic insulation.
  • Ductwork in attic is exposed above insulation.

Seal air leaks & add insulation for an energy upgrade that pays for itself

Don't forget to seal leaks!

Sealing air leaks and adding insulation can help:

  • Increase overall comfort
  • Reduce outside noise
  • Improve humidity control
  • Lessen the demand on your HVAC system
  • Improve indoor air quality

The attic is typically the biggest source of energy loss in a home. Installing the right amount of insulation and sealing air leaks can make a big difference in your energy bills and comfort.

Insulation levels and thermal performance are measured by R-Value. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation's ability to resist heat flow.

Many homes have as little as 9 in. of attic insulation in regions where the U.S. Department of Energy recommends 16 in. It is recommended that most homes in New York have between R-49 and R-60 of attic insulation, depending on the insulation material.

Air sealing is a critical step when insulating an attic because sealing air leaks stops conditioned interior air from leaking into the attic. Air sealing can prevent attic mold and significantly reduce heating and cooling bills. Foam It Insulation uses a variety of materials and techniques to stop this energy-wasting air leakage. Be sure to check out our specialized SuperAttic™ System for continuous & airtight coverage.

Whole-house energy savings & comfort starts in the attic
